Just like any programming language, you are constrained more by the language itself then by the number of lines you can use. I wound up using three slots, each one saying enemy attacking this person with melee, that person, and so on. I tried Ally being attacked by melee, but that targets the ally, not the mob, and so Attack wasn't an option. However, There really isn't any good way to set that up as a tactic. So I wanted a fairly simple line, If an enemy is attacking an ally with melee, I want alister to attack it until it attacks Alister instead (threaten acts like a taunt for each melee hit). So I was going to go with the idea that Alisters job is to get every mobs attention first, and to do damage second. the rest of the time, the mob is either already very mad or out of range of the taunt. I don't recall the exact gambits in FFXII anymore, but something I came up against today plaing DAO: I have Alister with Threaten, and a tactic that says to use Taunt if an ally is being attacked by a melee attack. The main difference between FFXII gambits and DAO tactics is in FFXII the gambit system was set up much better, so it was easier to script. I'm using the mod that gives 25 tactics slots, and it helps out quite a bit.
